Seeds, fertiliser, livestock vaccines and other necessary support are being given to farmers and livestock owners hit by floods in the Chattogram region so that they can recover quickly, said Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, Minister for Fisheries and Livestock and for Agriculture.
He said this at a views-exchange meeting with divisional and district-level officials at the Chattogram Circuit House on Saturday, 18 July.
The minister said the floods had caused extensive damage in the Chattogram region. Although the government cannot make good all the losses at once, necessary support is being given to rehabilitate affected farmers quickly.
FMD vaccination within 15 days
On livestock health, he said all livestock in flood-hit areas would be brought under foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination within the next 15 days. Animals vaccinated six months ago must also be revaccinated according to the schedule.
When an animal dies, a farmer suffers both financially and mentally, the minister said, and the government is strengthening its vaccination work with that in mind.
Zero tolerance for irregularities
He told officials to make sure that government aid reaches those genuinely affected and that nobody is left out. No irregularity or corruption in the distribution of seeds and vaccines will be tolerated; the government's position is "zero tolerance", and action will be taken quickly on any complaint of irregularity or negligence.
Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid added that when the government and society stand by people in a disaster, they find the strength to recover. The government is therefore working with the utmost sincerity to rehabilitate affected farmers and livestock owners, and charging extra money or any other irregularity in distributing government aid will not be tolerated.
Present at the meeting were Md Khorshed Alam, joint secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture; Md Anwar Hossain, director of the Department of Fisheries, Chattogram division; Dr Md Atiar Rahman, director of the divisional livestock office; Mohammad Ali Jinnah, additional director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Chattogram region; district fisheries officer Salma Begum; district livestock officer Dr Md Alamgir; DAE deputy director Apru Marma; and additional district magistrate Syed Mahbubul Haque, among other officials.
