Cattle and goat markets have been set up in the side streets of the capital, and they have come alive in the final days before Eid. This was the scene on Wednesday, 4 June, at an informal cattle market on the road behind the GTCL building in Agargaon.

The market, organised under the banner of a particular agro farm, already has more than 300 cattle and goats, and 39 were sold on the first day.

A trader named Muslim has brought nine cows from his own farm in Sirajganj. He told Jago News: "I have only just arrived at the market. Buyers are asking prices, but I have not sold one yet. People are waiting to get some idea of prices. Once selling starts and they get an idea, everyone will start buying."

Babu Mia, one of the market's managers, said cattle had been arriving for the past two days, but the market formally opened today. Thirty-nine cows have already been sold.

Mahbub Alam, a resident of West Agargaon, told Jago News: "I have come to buy a cow. But there is a big gap between what we expect and the farmers' prices. Perhaps that is because we have no idea of prices. I will look around, check and then buy."
