Two large cattle named Zayed Khan and Pathan, raised at RK Agro Farm in the Dhonkunda Godnail area of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, have finally been sold for Tk 14 lakh. The farm's manager, Md Abdus Samad, confirmed the sale on the afternoon of Monday, 26 June.
Md Harun, owner of Bornali Group and Limited in Siddhirganj, bought the two animals on the night of Sunday, 25 June.
On 22 June Jago News had published a report headlined that the 20-maund 'Pathan' was priced at Tk 10 lakh and 'Zayed Khan' would sell for Tk 8 lakh. The report drew attention across the country.
Buyers came from far and wide
"First of all I thank Jago News," manager Samad said. "After the report was published, countless buyers came to our farm from far away to buy the two cattle. But last night Md Harun, owner of Bornali Group and Limited, bought them at the highest price. The two cattle are still at our farm. They will be sent to Bornali Group on Tuesday morning."
District Livestock Officer Basona Akter said about one lakh animals could be sacrificed in Narayanganj this year, and more animals than the demand have been prepared. Besides specialised farms, ordinary farms and farmers have raised cattle at home for the sacrifice. Agro farms now attract buyers more, however, so many people buy their sacrificial cattle from them.
How the names were chosen
The farm named its two biggest cattle 'Pathan' and 'Zayed Khan' to attract buyers. Pathan, a two-and-a-half-year-old Sahiwal weighing 20 maunds, was priced at Tk 10 lakh, and Zayed Khan, an 18-maund Sindhi, at Tk 8 lakh.
Explaining the names, Samad said the film Pathan had just been released when the farm affectionately named that animal. Its build looks a lot like Pathan, he said, and the animal responds when called by that name.
On Zayed Khan, he said that when Pathan was released, Zayed Khan came into the spotlight by talking about the film. "When the two cattle were kept side by side, one would butt the other. So I thought, let's name this one Zayed Khan. It is now widely known on the farm by that name."
