A mobile court in Uzirpur, Barishal, sentenced a shopkeeper, Md Manik Bepari (40), to one month's simple imprisonment for selling hilsa in defiance of the ban.

Uzirpur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Md Sakhawat Hossain handed down the sentence on Sunday afternoon (13 October). Md Manik Bepari lives in Ramjankathi village in Babuganj upazila.

Confirming the matter, the UNO said the 22-day ban to protect mother hilsa in the breeding season began after midnight on Saturday (12 October). Catching, buying, selling and transporting hilsa is banned during this time. Even so, a seller came to Shikarpur bazar in the upazila to sell fish in defiance of the ban. Acting on information from local people, officials went to the market and detained him, seizing 20 kg of hilsa.

The UNO added that the seller was detained with the fish, given one month's simple imprisonment and handed over to the police.
