A head of cattle has died of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the United Kingdom. The disease is commonly known as "mad cow" disease.

The UK's Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) said the dead animal had been removed from a farm in Somerset, south-west England, so there is no longer a safety risk at the farm.

APHA chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss said: "The overall risk to the UK's food safety from mad cow disease remains controlled." She also said the disease currently poses no risk to public health.

British officials said the matter would be investigated further and a full report submitted.
