The fishing trawler FB Jannat-Junayed of Taltali in Barguna sank after being struck by heavy waves as it returned to shore from the Bay of Bengal.

Eleven of the thirteen fishermen aboard were rescued alive; two are still missing.

Taltali upazila nirbahi officer Atish Sarkar confirmed the sinking at six o'clock on Tuesday evening.

The accident happened at about eight in the morning, roughly 25 kilometres off Kuakata beach in Patuakhali.

The two missing men are Rakib, 19, and Nabi Hossain, 45, son of Harmuj Ali Howlader of Nishanbaria union.

Of the eleven rescued, six are from Taltali, four from Kalapara and one from Khulna.

Thousands of coastal families depend on the sea for income during the hilsa season, and heeding weather warnings to bring trawlers back remains the only real protection.
