Two river dolphins were caught in a fisherman's net in the Brahmaputra at Chilmari in Kurigram, and two men have been fined by a mobile court for buying them from the fisherman.
They paid the fines at a mobile court on Thursday, 24 June. The two had bought the dolphins at Jorgachh ghat in the upazila on the afternoon of Wednesday, 23 June.
They are Sujon Chandra of Bhobesh village in Hatia union of Ulipur upazila and his associate Ambar Ali, an auto-rickshaw driver.
Caught at Matikata crossing
Police said Sujon Chandra bought the two dolphins from a fisherman at Jorgachh ghat for Tk 8,500 on Wednesday afternoon. While he was taking them away in Ambar Ali's auto-rickshaw, the local Forest Department held him at Matikata crossing and handed him over to Chilmari police station.
On Thursday, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and executive magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman held a mobile court and fined Sujon and Ambar Ali Tk 5,000 each.
On the court's orders, the Forest Department, with the help of police, then buried the two dead dolphins in the grounds of the upazila administration office.
