Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, state minister for fisheries and livestock, has said the government is alert to preventing extortion at cattle markets and from vehicles carrying livestock, and that action will be taken accordingly.

He said this in reply to journalists' questions on Friday afternoon (8 May) at the final of the Nutun Kuri sports competition at Shaheed Maruf Stadium in Tangail.

The state minister also said the country has more animals in stock than it needs, so there is no need to bring in sacrificial animals from outside. "We will be able to supply according to demand," he said.

He said veterinary doctors will be on duty at every market so that the management of animal markets stays on track.

On stopping animals from being smuggled in, the state minister said the law enforcement agencies and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on duty in border areas have been told to ensure that no sacrificial animals enter illegally from outside.

Sultan Salahuddin Tuku later opened the final of the Nutun Kuri sports competition, in which separate matches were held for a boys' team and a girls' team.
