Afil Uddin, who lives in Taltala village on the Thakurgaon border, has been raising a bull of a foreign breed for six years. It now weighs about 1,700 kg, and because of its size and bearing it was named 'Bigboss'.
Last year it weighed about 1,500 kg and the asking price was Tk 30 lakh. Although the bull has gained weight, the price has not been raised, and a free 160cc Pulsar or Apache RTR motorcycle comes with it.
Afil Uddin bought the animal six years ago, when it was only 90 days old and weighed 27 kg. Since then he has raised it into a giant on natural feed and fruit. Last year he asked Tk 22 lakh for it but did not sell because he did not get the price he wanted. This time he hopes to sell at the price he expects.
Crowds come to see
The bull is 10 feet long and 5 feet 10 inches tall. Its weight is put at 1,700 kg, or 42.5 maunds. Hundreds of people, local and from far away, are coming to see it, and as last year the bull and its owner have caused a stir.
Bijli Akter, a local housewife, said Afil Uddin and his wife had raised the bull with care, like their own child. Seeing them, many people in the area are planning to raise cattle the same way.
Al Amin, a visitor, said: "I have never seen such a big cow before. It seems to me the best cow in the world. I hope it will sell at a fair price this time."
Fed on pulses and fruit
No medicine was used to fatten the bull. For six years Bigboss has been fed grass pea (khesari) dal, bran, gram, lentils and broken rice, along with apples, oranges, grapes, bananas and green coconuts. The owner said it eats about Tk 2,500 worth of food a day.
Afil Uddin said: "I raised this bull so big in the hope of selling it for the sacrifice. So that buyers can buy it for the sacrifice, I have not raised the price. Last year I set the price at Tk 30 lakh and wanted to give the buyer a 160cc Pulsar or Apache RTR motorcycle as a gift. It will be given this time too."
District livestock officer Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad said there is no other cow of this size or weight in the district. Afil Uddin has raised the bull very carefully for meat, no harmful medicine has been applied, and he has been given proper advice on rearing it.
