The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) bought 20 metric tonnes of fish, including golda prawns, bagda shrimp and rupchanda (pomfret), to send to the government of Kuwait as a gift. Because of various complications the fish could not be sent, and the TCB has now announced that it will sell them at auction.

The TCB published an auction notice on 18 August. It said the corporation had bought 20 tonnes of premium-quality fish to send foodstuffs to the Middle East as a gift from the government on an urgent basis: 10 tonnes of golda prawns and 5 tonnes each of bagda shrimp and rupchanda.

The problem arose over flights. Various difficulties with the flight to be sent by the Kuwaiti government meant the fish could not be dispatched. They are being kept at the processing plant of Trust Sea Food Industries Limited in Khulna, and the decision to auction them was taken on the instructions of the Ministry of Commerce.

The TCB has asked interested firms to apply to take part by the 25th. Bidders must buy at least 500 kg of fish and deposit a refundable security of Tk 15,000 to take part. According to the notice, participants may inspect samples of the fish on 23 and 24 August.

Among the other conditions, the winning bidder must pay within three working days of the auction and take delivery of the fish within the following three working days.
