Local people have rescued an endangered wild goat weighing 50 kg from the Dhopajan Chalti river in Sunamganj, having taken it for a deer.

The incident took place in the Dolura area of Sunamganj on Tuesday afternoon (26 December).

Local people saw the deer-like wild goat trying to save itself by swimming across the Dhopajan Chalti river and rescued it, believing it to be a deer. They later realised it was not a deer, although it looks much like one. They took it to the Dolura BGB camp, and on Tuesday night Bishwambharpur police and the BGB handed the animal over to the Sunamganj forest department.

Mohammad Nazmul Alam, assistant conservator of forests holding additional charge of the Sunamganj forest department, told Jagonews that the wild goat (red serow) rescued from the river had been handed over to the Lawachhara rescue centre in Moulvibazar. He said the animal is listed as endangered worldwide by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and will be released into the Rajkandi Reserve Forest.
