The Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation has rescued a banded krait (shankhini) from Sreemangal in Moulvibazar. The snake was rescued at around 10pm on Tuesday, 25 August, from the Purbasha residential area of Sreemangal town.

Everyone in Gopal Goswami's house in Purbasha panicked when they saw the snake. As word spread among local people, a man named Nahid informed the foundation.

The foundation's director Swapan Deb Sajal and environmental activist Rajdeep Deb Deep rushed to the spot and found that it was a banded krait (shankhamuti), a highly venomous species. They caught it safely and took it away.

The snake was later handed over to the Sreemangal forest range office. Confirming this, Sreemangal forest range officer Md Nazmul Islam said it would be released into the forest.

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) considers this species endangered in Bangladesh but of least concern globally.
