Four traders were allegedly hacked and injured in an attack on the sacrificial cattle market at Hossainpur in Sonargaon, Narayanganj. The attackers made off with Tk 5.2 lakh from cattle sales and three cows.
The incident took place on Friday night (14 June).
On Saturday afternoon the father of Raihan, one of the injured, filed a case with Sonargaon police station.
How the attack happened
According to the victims, Raihan, son of Md Jahirul Islam of Monairkandi village in the upazila's Pirojpur union, and his two nephews Sarowar and Roni took eight cows to the Hossainpur cattle market to sell. On Friday evening Raihan argued over electric lighting with Topu Hasan, son of Yunus Mia of Monairkandi village in Shambhupura union.
At one point they caused a disturbance there. A group of 10–15 people led by Topu Hasan, including Sohag, Simanta, Anik, Riyad, Sajib, Sifat, Liakat and Shovon, then launched a surprise attack in the market with local weapons, machetes, cleavers, iron rods and sticks. They hacked Raihan, Sarowar and Roni. When Raihan's uncle Shafiq and younger brother Alif Hossain came forward on hearing their cries, they were beaten and injured.
The injured were admitted to Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex. Raihan, whose condition was critical, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Md Shafiq, being treated at the Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex, said his nephew Raihan and two nephews took eight cows to the Hossainpur market and sold five. Then, over a trivial matter, teen gang member Topu Hasan led an attack and looted Tk 5.2 lakh, he said. They also took the three unsold cows.
Accused denies looting
Contacted, the accused Topu Hasan said there had been a clash between the two sides and that they had beaten his people too. The allegation of looting money and cows was not true, he said.
Md Mohsin, inspector (investigation) of Sonargaon police station, said a case had been accepted over the attack and looting at the cattle market, and action would be taken against those involved after investigation.
