The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian driver along with his truck while he was smuggling hilsa through Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj. A total of 17kg 600g of hilsa was seized.

The fish were seized from the truck at the zero point on Monday morning (7 October), as it was returning after unloading Indian goods at Sonamasjid land port.

The detained man is Alok Mondal, 22, son of Ranjit Mondal of Tiakathi village, Kanchantar, in India's Malda district.

Lt Col Golam Kibria, commander of 59 BGB Battalion, said they had information that hilsa might be smuggled through the Sonamasjid zero point on an Indian truck. Searches were stepped up, and an empty Indian truck was searched as it was entering India from Sonamasjid port. A box containing 17kg 600g of hilsa was found.

He said Indian truck driver Alok Mondal was detained for illegally smuggling hilsa to India. The detained man, the hilsa and the truck were later handed over to Shibganj police station, and a case has been filed against him.
