A young man named Sohel Rana, 35, has died after being bitten by a snake while fishing in Ullapara, Sirajganj. The incident happened on the morning of Sunday, 6 October, in Lakshmipur village of Panchakroshi union in the upazila.

In the evening, Mitul Bhowmika, a doctor in the medicine department of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital, confirmed the death to Jago News.

She said the patient (Sohel Rana) was brought to the hospital in a critical condition at around 7am. After he arrived, a blood clotting test was being done to confirm whether a venomous snake had bitten him, and he was given general treatment. He died a short while later. He was not given an antivenom injection.

His family said Sohel had gone fishing in the Bhuter Diyar canal near his home, where a snake bit his left hand. People nearby rushed over on hearing his screams and took him to a local ojha, a traditional snake healer. When his condition worsened there, he was taken to the emergency department of Sirajganj's Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital, where he died under treatment. He was buried in his village in the afternoon.

Firoz Ahmed, chairman of the local Panchakroshi union, said: "A young man has died of a snakebite like this in our area after a long time. It is deeply painful."
