Fishermen in Sirajganj Sadar have pledged not to catch hilsa in the Jamuna river for 22 days, from 13 October to 3 November. More than 100 fishermen who regularly fish the Jamuna took the pledge with raised hands.

They made the pledge on Wednesday afternoon (9 October) at the Soydabad union premises in Sadar upazila, during a public awareness meeting to make the "Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2024" a success and the distribution of VGF rice to fishermen.

District Fisheries Officer Shahinur Rahman was chief guest. In his speech he stressed the importance of raising public awareness about protecting mother hilsa and stopping hilsa fishing in the breeding season, and called on everyone present to cooperate.

Making their pledge, the fishermen said: "We do not want to be involved in any wrongdoing. We want to cooperate with the government programme and protect mother hilsa."

Sirajganj Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Anwar Hossain, Assistant Fisheries Officer Amjad Hossain and Field Assistant Golam Rabbi were present, along with fishermen.
