A college student, Hridoy Hossain, 18, has died after being bitten by a snake in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah. The incident happened late on Sunday night (12 October) at Aushia village in Shailkupa upazila.

Hridoy Hossain was the son of Milton Biswas of the village and a second-year student at Jhenaidah Polytechnic Institute.

Police and relatives said he was asleep in his own room when a venomous snake bit him at some point in the night. When they realised, family members took him to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex that night.

When his condition worsened there, the doctor on duty referred him to Kushtia General Hospital for better treatment. He died early on Monday after being taken to Kushtia.

Shailkupa upazila health and family planning officer Dr Rashed Al Mamun said the student was given antivenom after being brought to hospital that night. As he did not recover even after the antivenom, he was referred to Kushtia General Hospital during the night.

Shailkupa police station officer-in-charge (OC) Masum Khan said police had learned that the student had died of a snakebite and had spoken to the doctors. As no complaint was received from the family, the body was handed over to his relatives.
