State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku has said a modern reconstruction of Rajshahi Central Park and Zoo will be undertaken to restore its lost heritage.
He made the remarks after visiting the park and zoo at 11.30am on Monday, 13 July. Md Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, administrator of Rajshahi City Corporation, accompanied him. During the visit they toured the animal and bird enclosures, rides and other facilities.
Mismanagement and corruption
"The central park and zoo was once one of the main places of recreation for the people of Rajshahi. But long mismanagement and corruption have destroyed its heritage and put its very existence at risk. In line with people's expectations, steps will be taken to rebuild it as a recreation centre with modern facilities," the state minister said.
"The possibility of modernising Rajshahi's historic zoo and developing it on the model of a safari park is being examined. An expert team will visit very soon and make the necessary recommendations. The next steps will be taken on the basis of those recommendations," he added.
"Where the zoo's animals have been moved and what condition they are in now will be investigated, and the necessary action will be taken," he said.
Meat processing centre
He also said an initiative had been taken to set up a modern meat processing centre in Rajshahi. Rajshahi City Corporation has identified a possible site, and the ministry will take the necessary steps so that meat can be stored and marketed safely.
Praising city administrator Md Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, the state minister said: "In a short time there has been visible progress in keeping the city clean, clearing waterlogging and in development work. Tree planting and various other development activities are also under way."
Present during the visit were Dr Md Boyzar Rahman, director (administration) of the Department of Livestock Services; Dr Md Shahinur Alam, director of the National Zoo; Md Rezaul Karim, chief executive officer of Rajshahi City Corporation; and other senior officials.
