Fishermen caught taking hilsa on the Rajbari stretch of the Padma in defiance of the government ban were detained over a 24-hour period and later jailed or fined for various terms. The report's headline puts the number at 14 fishermen, while its opening says 13 were detained.

Rajbari district fisheries officer Md Mahbub Ul Haque confirmed the information at around 3pm on Tuesday (14 October).

He said eight drives were carried out on the Rajbari part of the Padma over the previous 24 hours by the district and upazila administrations and fisheries staff, with help from law enforcement agencies. In them 84 kg of hilsa and 89,000 metres of current net were seized.

A total of 14 fishermen were detained, six from the Padma in Rajbari Sadar upazila and eight from the Padma at Goalanda. The first five detained in Rajbari Sadar were given three days each, the eight detained in Goalanda were each jailed for 14 days, and one fisherman was fined Tk 2,000.
