As part of the drive to protect brood hilsa, 50,000 metres of net and 5 kg of hilsa were seized in the Rajbari stretch of the Padma river over 24 hours. An engine-driven fishing boat that was seized was auctioned for Tk 36,000.

Rajbari district fisheries officer Md Mahbub Ul Haque confirmed the information at around 3pm on Monday, 6 October.

He said seven drives were carried out on the Padma between 3pm the previous day and 3pm that day by district and upazila officials, with help from the administration and law enforcement agencies. An engine-driven fishing boat was seized at Kalabagan in Goalundo, and the fishermen fled, leaving the boat behind.

The Goalundo upazila nirbahi officer then held a mobile court in public and auctioned the boat for Tk 36,000, Mahbub Ul Haque said. The seized 50,000 metres of net were burnt and the 5 kg of hilsa were distributed to a local orphanage. The fisheries officer said such drives on the Padma to protect brood hilsa will continue.
