The administration in Rajbari has detained nine fishermen in the past 24 hours for fishing in the Padma in defiance of the government ban, and jailed and fined them for various terms. Seven kilograms of hilsa and 40,000 metres of current net were seized.

Rajbari district fisheries officer Md Mahbub Ul Haque confirmed the information at around 3pm on Friday, 10 October.

He said nine drives were carried out on different parts of the Padma over the past 24 hours with the help of the district and upazila administrations, fisheries staff and law enforcement agencies. Nine fishermen were detained, six from Rajbari Sadar upazila and three from Kalukhali.

Three of them were jailed for 21 days, three for 20 days and the other three for 10 days, and they were fined Tk 1,000 each, a total of Tk 3,000 as the officer put it. The seized fish were distributed to madrasas and the nets were burnt.

In seven days of the ongoing mother hilsa conservation campaign, the administration in Rajbari has so far detained 27 fishermen and jailed or fined them for various terms.
