A baghair catfish weighing 33 kg has been caught in the Padma River in Rajbari district. Put up for open auction at the Daulatdia fish market, it was eventually sold to a Dhaka trader for Tk 79,200.

The fish was taken in the net of fisherman Seken Halder at the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers around midday on Saturday, 19 September, local fish trader Samrat Shahjahan Sheikh confirmed.

Halder said he had gone out on the Padma with his companions on Saturday morning and cast his net through the day without finding the catch he wanted. When he lifted the net at the confluence around noon, the huge baghair came up; on the scales it weighed 33 kg.

Shahjahan Sheikh said he bought the fish at the Daulatdia market auction for Tk 72,600, or Tk 2,200 a kilogram, and then sold it by mobile phone to a Dhaka trader at Tk 2,400 a kilogram, for a total of Tk 79,200.

A crowd of curious locals gathered at the market to see the fish. Large baghair are now a rare catch at the Padma-Jamuna confluence, and a single fish fetching that price has drawn the attention of other fishermen on the river. The report is from the Krishi Shomoy desk.
