Two hilsa weighing 2 kg 600 grams in total have been caught in the Padma river at Daulatdia in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari. The two fish sold for Tk 10,400 at an open auction.

The fish were caught in the net of fisherman Kabir Haldar in the Char Karnesan area of Daulatdia at noon on 5 May.

Locals said Kabir Haldar brought the two fish to Halim's wholesale shop at Daulatdia ferry ghat to sell. There, at open auction, fish trader Samrat Shahjahan Sheikh of Daulatdia's No 5 ferry ghat bought them at Tk 4,000 a kg.

Local fishermen and wholesalers said that although large hilsa have been seen in the Padma recently, the numbers are very small and few are being caught, which has pushed up the price of big hilsa.

Fish trader Samrat Shahjahan Sheikh said big hilsa had arrived at the wholesale market after a long time and there was huge demand for large Padma hilsa. He would sell the two fish at a small profit, he said.
