Six hilsa weighing about 11 kg in all, caught in the Padma river at Daulatdia in Rajbari, have been sold for Tk 47,300.

Fish trader Samrat Shajahan Sheikh of the Daulatdia No 5 ghat area confirmed this on the afternoon of Sunday, 28 June.

Early on Sunday, fishermen Niamat Halder, Paran Halder and several others cast their nets at various points in the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers. When they hauled in the nets in the morning, they found two hilsa weighing about 3.5 kg and four weighing about 7 kg. The fish were then sold at open auction at Daulatdia's wholesale fish markets. Samrat Shajahan Sheikh bought the two hilsa at Tk 4,200 a kg and the four at Tk 4,100 a kg.

He said he later made contact online and sold the fish at Tk 4,300 a kg, a profit of Tk 100 a kg, for a total of Tk 47,300. The buyer was an Italy-based expatriate living in Gopalganj.
