A catla weighing 35 kg has sold for Tk 73,500 at a wholesale depot in the Daulatdia fish market in Goalanda, Rajbari.

On the morning of Sunday, 5 July, Samrat Shajahan Sheikh, a fish trader from the Daulatdia No 5 ghat area, bought the huge fish at an open auction at Md Halim's depot in the Daulatdia fish market at Tk 2,000 a kg.

Fisherman Jamir Haldar and his companions caught the giant catla when they cast their net in the Padma river at the Kalabagan area of Daulatdia early on Sunday. When they brought it to Halim's depot to sell, it weighed 35 kg. Curious locals crowded round to see the huge fish, which was sold at open auction at Tk 2,000 a kg for a total of Tk 70,000.

Fish trader Samrat Shajahan Sheikh said he bought the 35 kg catla for Tk 70,000 at the open auction in the morning. After phoning contacts in different parts of the country, he sold it to a Germany-based expatriate in Khulna at Tk 2,100 a kg, for a total of Tk 73,500.

He also sold the same expatriate a hilsa weighing 1 kg 800 g, which he had bought at Tk 4,100 a kg, at Tk 4,300 a kg, for a total of Tk 7,740.
