A python was kept trapped in a net for three days by a man hoping to sell it. Acting on a tip-off, members of the Wildlife and Snake Rescue Team rescued the snake on 12 July from the Kerani Bazar area of Sreepur-Kharandwip union in Boalkhali upazila, Chattogram.

Because the snake has injuries on its body, it will be released into the forest once it has recovered, said Amir Hossain Shaon, a member of the team.

Shaon said a local young man had kept the python in a net for the past three days to sell it. The python, four to four and a half feet long, is about two to two and a half years old. No buyer was found, so it was not sold. When Shaon went to rescue it, the man first objected and demanded money for the snake. Shaon then persuaded him that snakes are good for the environment and that catching or killing them is a crime under the law. Understanding this, the man handed the python over voluntarily.

He said the snake had been caught in a net set in a beel in the Kerani Bazar area that was flooded by heavy rain last Thursday. The python is now unwell and has injuries on its body. It will be treated and released into the forest once it has recovered, Shaon said.
