Police have rescued a python about six feet long from Paikerchhara beel in Bhurungamari, Kurigram.

The python was caught in fishermen's net while they were fishing in Chhit Paikerchhara beel in Paikerchhara union on the afternoon of Sunday, 2 August. They then informed Bhurungamari police station.

On receiving the news, assistant superintendent of police of the Bhurungamari circle Muntasir Mamun Moon went to the spot, rescued the python caught in the net and brought it to the police station. With the help of upazila forest officer Sekender Ali, the snake was then sent to the Kurigram forest department office.

According to the forest department, the python is healthy and will be released into a safe environment after the necessary observation.

Muntasir Mamun Moon said: "A few days ago upstream floodwater came down the Dudhkumar river. It is initially thought that the python was carried by the flood current from a forest area along the Assam border in India and got caught in the fishermen's net in the beel in Paikerchhara. On receiving the news we rescued it and handed it over to the forest department."

Sadikur Rahman, officer in charge of the Kurigram Social Forestry Nursery and Training Centre, said: "The python is being kept at our office for now. It will be handed over to the Rangpur divisional office on Monday morning, 3 August."
