Pufferfish: The Delicacy Whose Toxin Is Deadlier Than Cyanide

Not every food is safe without careful selection and preparation, and pufferfish is among the most dangerous.

In most cases food is thought to pose no danger. But the reality is that not every food can be eaten safely without care, careful selection and proper preparation, because the toxic part of some foods must be removed correctly before eating.

If these steps are not taken properly, some foods can cause serious illness, from nausea to breathing difficulty, delirium and even death.

Here are five foods that call for special care before eating. In fact, if you cannot be sure the steps below have been taken properly, it is better to avoid them.

Pufferfish

Pufferfish can be very dangerous. Its body contains a toxic substance called tetrodotoxin, which is thought to be deadlier than cyanide.

Despite the risk, pufferfish is known as an expensive delicacy in many countries. In Japan, fugu (a dish made with pufferfish) is often served raw or in soup. Japanese chefs must undergo several years of intensive training before they can prepare the fish and serve it to customers.
