A mobile court has jailed five fishermen for various terms for catching hilsa in Kawkhali, Pirojpur, in the final hours of the ban.

The five were detained on the upazila's Sandhya and Kocha rivers at midday on Saturday (October 25). Upazila Nirbahi Officer Swajal Molla, presiding over the mobile court, then handed down the sentences.

Those sentenced to three days are Raju Khan and Md Jafar of Keshorta village in the upazila, and Hasan Howlader and Mainul of Bekutia village. Rashid Sheikh of Ranipur village in Pirojpur was sentenced to seven days' simple imprisonment.

Upazila Fisheries Officer Hafizur Rahman said: "Five fishermen were detained on charges of catching hilsa in defiance of the ban. When they were produced before the mobile court, the magistrate sentenced four of them to three days each and one fisherman to seven days' simple imprisonment."
