A mobile court in Kawkhali, Pirojpur, has sentenced a fisherman to 17 days' simple imprisonment for catching hilsa in the Kacha river in defiance of the government ban.

He was detained and sentenced on the morning of Saturday, 11 October, during a drive on the Kacha river led by Kawkhali assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Sudipta Debnath.

The jailed fisherman is Bellal Fakir, 38, son of Altaf Fakir of Bekutia village in Kawkhali upazila.

Sudipta Debnath said the fisherman was punished for catching hilsa in breach of the ban, and the ongoing drive to protect mother hilsa will continue.

The government has banned catching, selling, transporting and storing hilsa across the country until 22 October this year.
