A mobile court has seized 20,000 metres of net and 10 kg of hilsa in a drive on the Payra river in Patuakhali.

The drive was carried out on the Lebukhali stretch of the river on the afternoon of Saturday, 19 October. Afterwards the seized nets were burnt and the recovered fish distributed to various orphanages.

The drive was led by Deputy Commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin. Those present included Additional Deputy Commissioner Jadab Sarkar, Additional Superintendent of Police Ahmed Mainul Hasan, district fisheries officer Md Kamrul Islam, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Iffat Ara Zaman Urmi, Dumki UNO Md Shaheen Mahmud and Sadar upazila fisheries officer Muhammad Mahfuzur Rahman.

According to the district fisheries office, three and a half lakh metres of net and 1,800 kg of hilsa have been seized in the district so far, and about fifty fishers have been sent to jail.
