A large hilsa weighing 1 kg 700 g has been caught in a fisherman's net at Patharghata in Barguna. The fish was later sold for Tk 9,000 at the local market.

It was caught at around 10am on Saturday 28 March in the Bishkhali river near Haringhata in the upazila.

Local people said Rasel Hossain, a fisherman from the Haringhata area, cast his net in the Bishkhali. When he hauled it in a little later, the big hilsa was among the other fish. It was brought to the BFDC fish landing centre at Patharghata, where a local wholesale fish house named "Munni Fish" bought it for Tk 8,500. When the price was then raised at an open auction among traders, a trader named Zakir Hossain bought it for Tk 9,000.

Fish trader Zakir Hossain said he bought the fish to sell because of its large size. Preparations are under way to send it to the Jatrabari fish market in Dhaka, where he expects it to fetch an even better price.
