A large pangas has been caught in a fisherman's net in the Padma river at Daulatdia in Rajbari. When weighed, the fish came to 22 kg 100 g.

The fish was caught in fisherman Anando Haldar's net at the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna, not far from the Daulatdia ferry ghat, on Saturday afternoon (6 November).

Md Chandu Mollah, owner of the Chandni Arifa fish wholesale shop at the Daulatdia ferry ghat, said the fish was brought to the ghat after it was caught on Saturday afternoon, and curious crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of it. "Later, with all the local fish traders taking part, I bought the fish for a total of Tk 33,000 at Tk 1,500 a kg. I am contacting traders in Dhaka to sell it at a higher price," he said.

Md Rezaul Sharif, Goalanda upazila fisheries officer, said the water in the Padma has fallen, and this year's hilsa protection drive was also a success. That is why large fish are now roaming the Padma-Jamuna confluence in search of food, and fishermen are catching them with nets. Local fishermen are profiting from catching such big fish, he said.
