A hilsa weighing 2 kg caught in the Padma at Daulatdia in Goalanda, Rajbari, has sold for Tk 9,200. The buyer is an expatriate from Tangail who lives in Saudi Arabia.
Fish trader Samrat Shajahan Sheikh of the Daulatdia No. 5 ghat area gave the information at 9.30am on Tuesday.
Auctioned at Tk 4,500 a kg
Fisherman Sagar Haldar and his companions cast their net in the Kushahata area of the Padma at Daulatdia before dawn on Tuesday. When they hauled it in in the morning they found a large silvery hilsa caught in it. They took the fish to Delwar's depot at Daulatdia, where it weighed 2 kg. In an open auction, Samrat Shajahan Sheikh, a fish trader of the Daulatdia No. 5 ferry ghat area, bought it at Tk 4,500 a kg, Tk 9,000 in all.
Samrat Shajahan said that after buying the hilsa at auction he made contact online and sold it at a profit of Tk 100 a kg, that is Tk 4,600 a kg, to the Saudi Arabia-based expatriate from Tangail. He also sold the same buyer another hilsa weighing 1 kg 600 grams, which he had bought at Tk 4,000 a kg and sold at Tk 4,200 a kg.
