Fresh red, white and yellow onions sold in 37 US states have been found to carry salmonella bacteria. The outbreak has made 652 people ill, of whom 129 have been admitted to hospital.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gave the figures. In a tweet the CDC said people should throw away unlabelled onions at home and should neither eat nor sell them. The advice applies to red, white and yellow onions imported from Mexico.
The onions were imported from Chihuahua in Mexico and supplied by ProSource Inc. Investigators are working to check whether any other onions or suppliers are linked to the outbreak. ProSource Inc said it has agreed to recall the onions voluntarily.
