A schoolboy named Raihan Mia, aged six, has died after being bitten by a venomous snake in Kalmakanda, Netrokona.

The incident happened at his home in Saudpara village, Sadar union of the upazila, on the morning of Thursday 16 October. Raihan was a first-grade pupil at Saudpara Government Primary School and the son of Akhtar Hossain of the village.

Family members said Raihan was bitten by a venomous snake when he went to the toilet at home in the morning. The family rushed him to Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty, Dr Sohrab Hossain Linkon, declared him dead.

The child's death has plunged the family into grief. Relatives broke down in tears at the hospital, and as the news spread, sorrow descended on the whole area.
