Environmental volunteers have freed more than 50 egrets caught in poachers' traps in Chalan Beel. The birds were rescued at dawn on Saturday from traps set in Agmurshan, Bamihal, Kakian and Purbo Bhengri beels in Singra upazila, Natore.
Saiful Islam, general secretary of the Chalan Beel Biodiversity Protection Committee, said hunters had been catching egrets in paddy fields with special traps made of banana and date-palm leaves and bamboo. Tipped off by local people, the volunteers went to the beel, caught three hunters along with the birds and destroyed ten traps.
The three hunters were taken before a mobile court, where executive magistrate Nishat Anjum sentenced each to one day in jail and a fine of Tk 2,000.
Committee president Professor Akhtaruzzaman, organising secretary Harun-or-Rashid and joint secretary Hasibul Hasan Shimul were among those present.
