A wild elephant has died in Nalitabari, Sherpur. After a post-mortem it was buried in the upazila's Daodhara forest at midday on Monday (9 June), according to the report's opening.

Forest Department officials said local people heard a wild elephant screaming in the Daodhara Garo Hills area on Friday. Because Saturday was Eid day, no one went into the jungle. On Sunday, the Forest Department, ERT members and local people searched the hills together, and in the afternoon they found the body of a newborn elephant calf. Because a herd of wild elephants was nearby, the calf could not be recovered or examined at that time.

Forest officials, including veterinary surgeon Sakib Hossain of the upazila livestock office, examined the dead calf and buried it on Monday afternoon.

Forest Department wildlife ranger Md Abdullah Al Amin said: "We think the calf died from causes related to its birth. Higher authorities have been informed."

Md Dewan Ali, range officer of Madhutila Ecopark, said the calf was no more than one or two days old. It was buried after the body was examined in line with the wildlife protection law, he said.
