Imams and muezzins will be trained to take part in modern farming, Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid has said. The training will cover safe, toxin-free food production, the use of modern farm technology and year-round cultivation.
Speaking as chief guest at a conference organised by the Bangladesh Hafez Kalyan Foundation at Cumilla Town Hall ground on Saturday, the minister said every village in the country has a mosque, and its imams and muezzins can raise awareness of farming and safe food. If they take up pesticide-free farming themselves, he said, they can become financially self-reliant and encourage others to produce safe food.
He called for cutting the overuse of pesticides and focusing on safe crops. Farmers once grew many crops without chemical inputs, he said, and that experience should be combined with modern technology to build an environment-friendly farming system.
Agriculture officers in every union and farm block already advise farmers regularly on modern technology and production methods, the minister said, and bringing in imams and muezzins would carry the safe-food message to people more quickly.
At the end of the event, he handed certificates and mementos to hafez students who passed the third Hifzul Quran scholarship examination.
