The Forest Department has seized eight kilograms of deer meat dumped by smugglers who fled when chased in Mongla. The meat was recovered on Thursday (16 March) from a shrimp enclosure where the smugglers threw it while being chased by the Forest Department.

Obaidur Rahman, station officer of the Chandpai range (Mongla) of the East Sundarbans division, confirmed the matter.

Forest Department sources said that, acting on a tip-off, the department raided the Joymoni area next to the Sundarbans in the upazila's Chila union at around 3pm on Thursday. When forest guards Mizanur Rahman, Selim Sarkar and Md Raja raided the embankment of Anwarul Sheikh's shrimp enclosure in Ward 9 of Chila union, two smugglers sensed their presence, threw a bag full of deer meat into the water of the enclosure and fled.

The Forest Department gave chase but could not catch or identify the smugglers. Eight kilograms of deer meat in a bag was later recovered from the water of the enclosure.

Officer Obaidur Rahman said the eight kilograms of meat seized came from the head, legs and breast of a small fawn. A case has been filed over the incident.

Earlier, on Monday (13 March), police seized 19 kilograms of deer meat from the Tower Bazar area of Narkeltala in the upazila's Chandpai union.
