A hilsa weighing nearly three kilograms has been caught in a fisherman's net in the Meghna river at Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur. Trader Riaz Uddin bought the fish for Tk 9,350.

The hilsa was caught in the net of Abduzzaher Majhi on the night of 11 June. He brought it to Haji Hannan Mia's fish wholesale depot at the Motirhat fish landing on the Meghna. Bidding opened at Tk 7,000, and the fish finally sold for Tk 9,350.

Fisherman Abduzzaher Majhi said fewer hilsa were being found in the river, but the few caught now were large. He cast his net on Tuesday afternoon, and when he hauled it in at night he found the big hilsa. It was then taken to the Motirhat landing and put up for auction.

Md Khokon, an employee at a Motirhat depot, said that for the past few days hilsa of about a kilogram had been arriving in larger numbers, but the nearly three-kilogram fish from Jaher's net was a surprise. Such big hilsa are rarely found, he said, and its size is why it fetched a high price.
