Around 400 pigeons are alleged to have been killed with poison laid in a pea field in Manirampur, Jashore. Locals say the pigeons died from poison applied by the field's owner, Sajjat Hossain, in Tajpur village. The incident has caused tension in the area.

Sajjat Hossain is the son of Ershad Ali of Tajpur village in Manirampur upazila.

According to local sources, Sajjat Hossain grew peas on two bighas at the Muktarpur Talsari Tetultala field. He applied poison to the crop three days ago, and over the past two days at least 400 pigeons have died after eating the peas.

Billal Hossain, Toraf Ali, Azizur Rahman, Fazlur Rahman and other affected pigeon owners in Tajpur said many villagers' pet pigeons had been killed this way. They demanded justice for the shameful act.

Sajjat Hossain admitted applying the poison. He said he planted the peas hoping to make a profit, and applied poison because pigeons were eating the crop he had spent money on. If pigeons died as a result, there was nothing he could do about it.

Manirampur upazila nirbahi officer Zakir Hossain said action would be taken if a complaint was received.
