A venomous Russell's viper has been caught in a fisherman's net in Harirampur, Manikganj.

The snake was trapped in a China duari net on Wednesday (26 June) afternoon at Bhatikandi, a newly formed Padma char in Ramkrishnapur union of the upazila.

Afsar Mistri, 45, of Darikandi village in Boyra union of the upazila, spotted the Russell's viper around noon while taking fish out of the China duari net.

Afsar Mistri said: "I carefully caught the snake alive and brought it to Andharmanik trawler ghat. It is about three feet long. The snake was then handed over to local journalists. On being informed, forest department officials came in the evening and took it away."

Wildlife and biodiversity conservation officer Rathindra Kumar Biswas said the snake would be sent to the Forest Department in Dhaka. Senior officials will decide whether it will be used for research or released somewhere.
