A woman, Maleka Begum, 50, has died of a venomous snakebite in Raipur, Lakshmipur.

The incident happened on the morning of Saturday, 29 July, on the remote Tunur Char of Charkachhia village in South Char Bangshi union of the upazila.

Maleka was the wife of Alauddin Horkar of Horkar Bari in the area.

Local residents Akter Hossain and Tazia Begum said Maleka went to the remote char in the morning to graze cattle, where a snake bit her on the right leg. She returned home and told her family, while the bite was still bleeding. Her family rushed her to the Sadar Hospital.

Anwar Hossain, resident medical officer (RMO) of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, said the snakebite patient was brought to hospital dead and is thought to have died on the way. The family has taken the body away.
