A hilsa weighing two and a half kilograms has been caught in the Bay of Bengal. It was sold at auction for Tk 9,200 at the Matirhat fish landing in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur.

Local fish trader Amir Hossain bought the fish as the highest bidder on the morning of 26 October.

Bhola fisherman Saddam went fishing at sea with 15 companions. When they cast their net on the night of 25 October, the big hilsa was caught along with other hilsa. The fish was then brought to the wholesale stall and sold at auction for Tk 9,200. The commission agent said the fisherman got such a high price because little fish is being caught in the Meghna river.

Commission agent Md Babul said fisherman Saddam brought the big hilsa to the stall along with many other fish. On the very first day after the 22-day ban, a big hilsa came to the stall and sold at a high price. Such big hilsa are not usually caught, he said.

Trader Amir Hossain said: "I bought the two-and-a-half-kilogram hilsa for Tk 9,200. There is great demand for big hilsa at the wholesale markets in Dhaka, and it will be sent there. I hope to sell it for at least Tk 11,000 to 12,000."
