A local fisherman in Ulipur, Kurigram, has found a python about 10 feet long in his net. Forest department representatives came to the spot on the afternoon of Saturday 9 August and took the injured snake away. It happened at Fakirer Char in Buraburi union of the upazila.

Local people said Amjad Ali, a resident of Fakirer Char, set a banned "China darki" net in a backwater of the Brahmaputra on Friday morning. The snake went into the net to eat fish. When Amjad Ali went to lift the net, he found a python about 10 feet long and weighing about 15 kg. As word spread, people from the area crowded round.

Abbas Ali, the local union parishad member for Buraburi, said he had gone to see the snake, and that the forest department's Kurigram representative later took it away.

Naim Islam, a representative of the Wildlife and Snake Rescue Team, said the snake had an injury to its head and had been sent to Rangpur for treatment.

He added that the Burmese python is a non-venomous and endangered species. "They do people no harm; rather, they play an important role in keeping the balance of our environment. Many people kill such snakes out of fear or misconceptions," he said.

Fazlul Haque, the Ulipur upazila forest officer, said the snake was injured and had been rescued and sent to Rangpur Zoo.
