An eight-foot python has been rescued in Bhurungamari, Kurigram. The snake was in the top branches of a jarul tree.

Locals spotted it at the top of the tree in the Bhasani Para area of Kamat Angaria village in the upazila around noon on Tuesday 2 December. They informed the forest department, and local snake charmers brought the snake down.

The forest department and police said the snake will be handed over to the Rangpur forest department, which will decide where to release it.

Local resident Babu Mia said, "While working in the field I heard birds chirping at the top of the tree. When I looked up, I saw a python lying there."

Another resident, Yunus Ali, said, "Snakes like this have not been seen in this area before. A few months ago lots of trees floated down the river from Bhutan. The snake may have come with those trees." He added, "One has been caught. There may be more snakes like this. We are frightened. More searching is needed."

Sekendar Ali, deputy ranger at the Bhurungamari social forestry and nursery centre, said, "The snake is eight feet long. It has been sent to the Kurigram range office, and from there it will be sent to the Rangpur divisional forest officer's office."

Muntasir Mamun, assistant superintendent of police for the Bhurungamari circle, said the snake had been rescued unharmed and would be handed to the Rangpur forest department through the Kurigram forest department.
