A seller in Kumarkhali, Kushtia, dropped his hilsa and fled on seeing a magistrate's car. Six kilograms of hilsa were later recovered from the spot.

The incident happened at about 4.30pm on Sunday, 20 October, at the entrance to the Shilaidah Rabindra Kuthibari in the upazila. The seller's identity could not be established.

At about 5pm, the upazila administration also ran a drive to protect mother hilsa at the Shilaidah ghat area of the Padma river. One person was fined Tk 5,000 for catching hilsa in defiance of the ban, and about 2 kg of hilsa and 10,000 metres of current net were seized. The seized nets were burnt and the hilsa given to an orphanage.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md Amirul Arafat said such drives to conserve hilsa would continue.

Senior upazila fisheries officer Mahmudul Hasan said catching, harvesting, transporting and selling hilsa is banned from 13 October to 3 November.
