A four-foot monocled cobra (padma gokhra) has been rescued from a home in Patuakhali and released into its natural habitat.

The snake was rescued on the afternoon of 21 July from the home of a farmer named Porimol, a resident of ward 3 of Kuakata municipality.

Members of Upokul Poribesh Rokkha Andolon Kuakata (UPORA) and the Animal Lovers of Patuakhali team carried out the rescue jointly under the banner of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association (BAWA). The snake was later released in the Gangamati reserve forest.

Locals said panic spread when the venomous snake was suddenly seen in the courtyard. On being informed, volunteers quickly reached the spot and rescued it alive.

KM Bachchu, a member of the BAWA Kuakata team, said that when any wild animal enters a settlement, people should not kill it in panic but should inform a rescue team or the forest department. Wildlife plays an important role in keeping the environment in balance, he said.

Monirul Islam, Mohipur police station range officer, said that under the wildlife protection law snakes and all other wild animals are protected. So if any wild animal is seen in a settlement, people must contact the forest department or a trained rescue team instead of killing it.
