An injured, mildly venomous kalnagini snake has been rescued in Kalapara, Patuakhali. On the advice of a veterinary surgeon, members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali then had it X-rayed so that it could receive better treatment.

The snake was brought to a private clinic in the municipal town at 10pm on Wednesday (9 July). The X-ray showed a crack in the bone along the middle of its body.

Earlier that morning, members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali had saved the snake from villagers who were beating it with sticks near Pujakhola Dafadar Bari in neighbouring Amtali upazila.

Many people were surprised to see a snake X-rayed for the first time, and conscious citizens praised the work to protect wildlife. The adult snake, striped in green, red and black, is about 3 feet long.

Bayzid Ahsan, team leader of the Kalapara branch of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali, said: "The injured snake was X-rayed with the help of Kalapara upazila assistant commissioner (land) Yasin Sadek. After first aid, the snake will be sent to a veterinary surgeon in Dhaka for better treatment."

Saeed Hossain, X-ray technician at Lab Asia Diagnostic Centre in Kalapara, said: "We mainly X-ray people. This is the first time we have X-rayed a snake. We hope it will recover."

Kalapara upazila assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate Yasin Sadek said: "When we heard about the injured snake, we asked for it to be treated. All kinds of help will be given to make it fully healthy again."
